OWS manages one of the first CAPTURE projects

Monday, November 27th, 2017

On November 22nd, Ghent University launched CAPTURE, the  Centre for Advanced Process Technology for Urban REsource recovery.

CAPTURE focuses on three key waste streams, CO2, domestic wastewater and plastic, and approaches them as resources, not as waste. CAPTURE integrates scientific knowledge and market knowledge by connecting key stakeholders: industry, knowledge institutions and policy makers.

OWS is involved in one of the first projects emerging from the CAPTURE initiative, CAPRA. Other project partners are ArcelorMittal, Proviron, UGent and VITO. CAPRA is funded by VLAIO, via the cluster organization CATALISTI. The CAPRA project aims at the development of an anaerobic biological process technology for the conversion of undistilled syngas fermentation products (ethanol and acetic acid) to a bio-oil of medium-chain carboxylic acids, that can serve as feedstock for the production of added-value chemicals with high market potential.

The CAPRA project matches a demand from 2 industries: the steel-making industry, that is looking for opportunities to valorize waste gases, and the chemical industry, that is looking for alternative and sustainable sources of carboxylic acids as building blocks for the production of chemicals. The CAPRA project is a unique opportunity for OWS to develop the microbial technology that can fulfill this demand in a joint project between knowledge institutions and industries.
